Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a hand problem that affects the nerve that gives feeling to the little and ring fingers. It is characterized by decreased sensation, or 'pins and needles' phenomena to these two fingers. In late presentation (someone who has had the numbness for a long time,) people will also cite clumsiness and general hand weakness.
Carpal tunnel is most often associated with repetitive use of the hand but is also seen in diabetics, or people with anatomically small tunnels around the nerves. Heavy use of keyboards, or repetitive motion of any kind are major contributors to CTS.
Conservative treatment of this problem begins with the addition of B-Complex vitamins which may aid in nerve function, range of motion exercises to stretch out the wrist area, ergonomic modification of work areas, and resting splints for the wrist and hand. If all conservative management fails, surgery becomes the most viable option to reduce symptoms and to prevent permanent nerve damage.
Plastic surgeons commonly perform carpal tunnel surgery as many are specialized in hand surgery. In most cases, this surgery is done using only local freezing, and takes less than 30 minutes to complete. Generally sensation to the fingertips returns very quickly, providing almost immediate relief from symptoms. Most people require 2-6 weeks off work, depending on the type of jpb performed.

There's been alot of hoopla about plastic surgery in celebrity news these days, and often times, the excessiveness of the stars (think Heid Montag,) makes plastic surgery seem pretty weird, out there, and over the top.
The people I see on a daily basis in my practice, do not match what the stars and media present plastic surgery as. They are everyday, ordinary individuals, who actually want to still look like themselves! As a result of the media, some people think a facelift will change or make their face 'unreal.' Not So! The best facelifts are the ones that are hardest to detect. The person still looks like themselves, just fresher and perhaps more youthful. A natural, proportioned look, whether it be on your face or body, is always the look I try to achieve for my clients.
There will always be the stars and their crazy pursuit of eternally youthful faces and bodies, but for the rest of us, I think we should simply do our best, at looking our best, for the age we are!

What you should know about the sun....
Sure, we're heading into the winter months, but did you know that overcast days are not much safer than those that are sunny, as 70-80% of the sun's ultraviolet rays can get through clouds.
Sunscreen should be worn daily throughout winter months and should block both UVA Rays (aging) and UVB Rays (burning) and should be reapplied every 2-3 hours for maximum protection from burning, hyperpigmentation increase, and aging from the rays.
Sunscreen has been clinically documented to slow the aging process.
UVA RAYS (Aging Rays)
*Can pass through glass (office and cars)
*Are not affected by weather or altitude
*Are present all day, every day of the year
*Are 20 time more abundant that UVB
UVB RAYS (Burning Rays)
*Cause sunburns and tanning
*Vary with seasons (stronger in the summer)
*SPF (sun protection factor) number shows the level of protection from UVB rays
*Tanning is the body's efforts at protecting itself from harmful rays
Planning a Fun in the Sun vacation this winter?
The sun is an estimated 80% stronger when reflected off sand and snow. Beach Babes and SnowBunnies arm yourself with SPF! At minimum, you should aim for an SPF of 20 or higher, and SPF within makeup does not replace the need for sunscreen applications.
Commit to daily use of sunscreen and benefit from healthier, more youthful appearing skin!
